Virginia 10-year-old takes her own life after standing up to bullies

Author:

Autumn Bushman, a 10-year-old girl from Roanoke, Virginia, tragically took her own life on March 21 after reportedly being bullied at school. Her parents say Autumn became a target after standing up for classmates who were being bullied. Over time, her personality changed—she became withdrawn, wore darker clothes, and lost her spark.

Despite the family alerting school administrators, they feel the response was inadequate. Autumn had recently begged to stay home from school, overwhelmed by stress. Her death has deeply affected her family and the local community.

Autumn’s parents, Summer and Mark Bushman, are now speaking out to raise awareness about bullying and the importance of mental health support in schools. They describe Autumn as kind, brave, and full of life—someone who loved dance, cheer, and archery, and always stood up for others.

The school district has launched an investigation, but for the Bushman family, the action comes too late. They hope Autumn’s story will inspire real change and help prevent similar tragedies in the future.
